Get Started

UO Online courses rely on several different types of technology to deliver course content. Generally, online students will most frequently be using their UO e-mail and Canvas to communicate with their instructors, but some courses may require additional software or technology.

UO E-mail Accounts

Your UO email address is used for communication with your instructors and peers as well as logging into programs like Canvas. Information about your UO email address can be found on the UO Service Portal.

If you are new to the University of Oregon, you can claim your e-mail account by visiting the Duck ID identity management.

If you are having issues logging into your e-mail account, you may need to speak with the Technology Service Desk to reset your password.

Canvas

Canvas (canvas.uoregon.edu) is the course management system used by the University of Oregon and gives you access to your online courses. Canvas enables you to engage with:

  • Course content by viewing, reading, printing, or downloading course materials
  • Other students by participating in discussion boards, groups, or live chats
  • Instructors by submitting assignments, taking quizzes and exams, or sending emails
  • Your learning progress by monitoring your grades

All the messages your instructors send via Canvas will be sent to your UO e-mail account. You should check both Canvas and your UO e-mail address frequently.

Logging in to Canvas

When logging in to Canvas, your username and password are the same as your UO e-mail account. Use everything before the “@” sign in your email as your username and use the same password.

Example:

If your UO e-mail is "johndoe [at] uoregon.edu." Enter "johndoe" as your Canvas username.

Software and System Requirements

Specific courses may also require additional software or technology such as video cameras, microphones, scanners, and digital cameras. For these requirements, review your course syllabus or contact your instructor.
