How do I access a course after I have registered?

After you have registered for a course and the term has begun, you can access your online course via Canvas. Canvas is a web-based course management tool. Please note that you will need to have a University of Oregon DuckID e-mail account (e.g. example @uoregon.edu), to access Canvas. If you do not have a UO DuckID e-mail account, you can claim your account DuckID using your 95-student ID number and PAC. Students located in the Eugene-Springfield area will take their exam at the UO Online Exam Center located in room 19 of the Knight Library. Off-campus students will need to locate a remote proctor in their area.

Registration

How do I register for online courses?

You can register for online courses via DuckWeb, an interactive web application that allows you to view, update, or print personal student and registration data. Some courses may have pre-requisites, which will be noted on the course listing on the Schedule of Classes.

How do I register for online courses if I am not admitted to the University of Oregon?

You can register for UO courses as a non-admitted student through the Community Education Program (CEP). CEP allows for you to enroll in UO courses as a part-time, non-admitted student, and allows anyone to register for up to 8 credits (graduate or undergraduate) per term without formal admission. Please visit the CEP website for more information about registration.

What do I need to register for an online course?

You must have an active registration status, student ID number, and Personal Access Code (PAC) to register for UO courses. If you were admitted to UO and want to reactivate your status, please visit the Office of the Registrar's page on re-enrollment. If you have never taken courses at the University of Oregon and are not an admitted student, you can register for courses as a CEP student.

What does it mean to audit a course?

Audited courses are recorded on a student's academic record, but no credit is earned. The tuition and fees for the audit option are the same as the credit option, but the academic expectations of course work are not the same. Audited classes do not satisfy degree requirements or the Graduate School's continuous enrollment requirement. Most online courses are not available for audit registration status; please check with the course instructor and/or academic department for confirmation. Auditor Registration forms are available from the Office of the Registrar beginning the first day of classes each term. Courses can be audited only if space is available and department or instructor approval is granted.

Costs

How much do online courses cost?

Tuition and fees for online courses vary by course. Your student status, the number of registered credits, and whether the course has regular tuition or a self-support fee determine the course cost. To estimate the cost, visit the Office of the Registrar's How Much Will It Cost? webpage.

For questions about the costs for online graduate programs please contact the program directly.

How do I pay for online courses?

The University of Oregon utilizes QuikPAY®, an electronic system for all students to view and print their bills as well as make payments online. When your billing statement is ready, a notice will be sent to your UO e-mail account.

Are there any special technical requirements/skills I need in order to take an online course?

Students most successful in UO Online courses are highly motivated and accustomed to independent learning. They are also comfortable accessing and using the Internet and e-mail. At a minimum, students should have access to the following basic system requirements and know how to use the technology and software:

  • An active UO DuckID (i.e., access to UO e-mail and Canvas accounts) e-mail address (e.g., example @uoregon.edu).
  • Apple or PC based system from within the last three years.
  • Internet connection: Cable or DSL is strongly recommended.
  • Web browsers (e.g., Firefox or Chrome) need to be as current as possible.
  • Word, PPT, excel and PDF programs
  • Astronomy, Environmental Science, and Physics courses also require that a student's web browser be able to run Java applets.
  • Students using assistive technology (such as screen readers or voice recognition programs) should have this software installed and be familiar with its functionality before starting an online course.

Many courses require other software programs, such as media players or Acrobat Reader, as well as additional hardware, such as a scanner, digital camera, or microphone. Visit the Technical Assistance page for helpful links.

Who should I contact if I have questions about course content or experience technical difficulties?

Contact the course instructor via e-mail if you have any questions about course content (e.g., assignments, grading, etc.).  If you need technical assistance you can visit or contact the Technology Service Desk.
